How to Keep your Home Warm
It’s that time of year again when sunshine turns into rain, and the warm summer breeze shifts into the cold winter air.
We are back to the gloomy cold Seattle weather that we all know and dread. The weather that keeps us trapped in our warm homes and near the fireplace.
It’s not a bad idea when sipping on a glass of wine by your fireplace, but not for nine months.
This period is known to be the most expensive energy bill period. So we decided to think outside of the box and make our homes warm and cozy without spending tons of money.
Below are some tips you might find beneficial to keep your home and family warm:
- Caulk your window frames.
Apply caulk to seal off air leaks around windows. It is cheap to purchase and saves you some money on your energy bill.
Open the curtains when it’s sunny out and fill your house with some sunshine. That will make your home fresh and warm naturally.
- Close the curtains when the sun sets.
When the sun sets, immediately close all your curtains to keep all the heat captured inside.
It is best to use heavy thermal curtains to trap the heat inside.
We all love hardwood floors, but in the winter, add some fun, plush area rugs to your rooms and floors.
- Shower with the door open.
This may be funny but it’s true. Showering with the door open lets warm, steamy air travel through the rest of your house.
- Use the oven to cozy up your kitchen.
After you are done baking, open the oven so that all the heat can enter the kitchen.
- Block your doors with draftstoppers.
Fill in the gap between the door and floor with a draftstopper. You can either purchase it or make your own at home.
- Insulate your windows with bubble wrap.
Put bubble wrap on your windows to cut heat loss in half.
Make sure to close off all unused doors.
- Bring out those flannel sheets.
Stay warm at night and use flannel sheets and cover up with thick comforters.
If you don’t have one, go get one! A programmable thermostat is a necessity. It will program your heating and save you some money.
Hope these tips work and make you warm all winter. If not, then you have no choice but to bundle up!
Stay warm.
